MM2 - Conceptual diagrams for Visualising the Logic of Studies (Quant or Qual)

Principal speaker

Associate Professor Sama Low-Choy

This workshop explores different ways of showing key variables and how they are related, which underpins studies that are quant, and sometimes qual. This includes the conceptual framework, which summarises the logic of a study, and helps define research questions and important concepts that provide a rationale for the data collected. We introduce the notion of mindmaps which show important concepts and how they are related. Then we progress to concept mapping, which are more structured than mindmaps, and identify key variables (things that are measured or studied) whilst also proposing causal hypotheses regarding how variables are potentially related. We show how a common conceptual framework can help integrate Qual/Quant methods in a MM study.Examples are provided showing how such diagrams may also provide a starting point for some forms of statistical modelling, such as Structural Equation Models and Bayesian Networks.

Format: This workshop will be delivered online, with unsupervised small group work (no tutors) via breakout sessions. Be prepared to scribble!

Level Beginners, with a research question of their own, who wish to explore visual ways of describing a MM approach to research, and/or obtain a visual introduction to a MM way of doing research.

Recommended Preparation: Please find and share a diagram from your reading, which is a mindmap, concept map, structural equation model or Bayesian network model. You will be invited to share an example in the week prior to the workshop. (The presenter will share a couple too.)
