This workshop explores different ways of visualising the strategy for a Mixed Methods study, which lies at the heart of many empirical studies. We start with diagrams for mapping out a small number of broad themes to arrange your literature review. Then we consider the logic underpinning empirical studies, including the phases of analysis (from questioning, conceptualization and design to data collection then analysis and interpretation). This includes distinguishing conceptual, exploratory and confirmatory research. Importantly clarifying this structure may affect how the quality of empirical research is judged and understood. Hence these diagrams can be crucial at the beginning of long reports, research theses, mixed methods research, or to summarize a sequence of studies. For complex studies, it is important to describe each component of the study, and show how they relate to one another. It is particularly important to delineate the qualitative and quantitative components of mixed methods studies. This may not only help organize reporting of the study, but also help situate a study within a wider perspective of previous and future studies. These visual devices can be presented in different ways; and can provide a useful introduction for a paper or thesis chapter, structure the literature review, or be a useful slide in a presentation. Such figures may be crucial to supporting communication by and within the research team. Increasingly publications are requesting graphical abstracts, so these diagrams can make your work more accessible by others, and increase download and citation rates.

Format: This workshop will be delivered online, with unsupervised small group work (no tutors) via breakout sessions. Be prepared to scribble!

Level: Beginners, with a research question of their own, who wish to explore visual ways of describing a MM approach to research, and/or obtain a visual introduction to a MM way of doing research.

Recommended Preparation: You will be invited to find and share one diagram describing a mixed methods strategy in the week prior to the workshop. (The presenter will share a couple too.)
