Ausma Bernot

Critical reading and writing about mixed methods involves appraisal and justification. This session looks at the core theoretical concepts of mixed methodologies (MM) and unpacks common difficulties in explaining and justifying the choice of MM study design aspects in academic writing. An immersive part of the workshop offers a hands-on active learning element of designing, conceptualising, and explaining the choice of a MM study. The workshop also "reverse-engineers' one possible checklist for appraising mixed methods to showcase how writing affects the perceived quality of MM. We end the workshop by explaining how conceptual frameworks can help justify research design decisions and, finally, equip participants with a theoretical toolset to assist critical reading and writing of MM.

Note: We do not discuss multi-methods in this workshop, although researchers employing multi-methods may benefit from the examples examined in the workshop.

Part 1. theoretical introduction to conceptual frameworks.
Part 2. guides participants to analyse the use of conceptual frameworks in published research.

Format: Online workshop. This learner-led workshop involves pre-workshop participation and in-class discussion.

Intended audience: Advanced beginners.

Connected workshops: Participants will benefit more if they can attend most of the other 6 MM sessions in Foundations of Mixed Methods. This workshop has different focus to, and complements, workshops on Critical Inquiry on Method (CIM1: Rose/Low-Choy; CIM-Many: Low-Choy/Rose).

Preparing for the workshop: This is a learner-led workshop. The more you contribute, the more you will take away. I request your help with the following preparations. (1) During registration, please raise questions that you have about conceptual frameworks. (2) Use an online shared document to access pre-reading that are required or recommended. (3) Use the Discussion Forum section in the shared document to ask any questions prior to the workshop. (4) Start a conversation with fellow learners by sharing resources on the topic.
