Recruiting Participants for Interviews

Recruiting Participants for Interviews

Principal speaker

Dr Judy Rose

Recruiting participants for research interviews can be difficult, even after effort has gone into planning interview questions and gaining ethical approval. This workshop offers practical guidance on devising a recruitment plan, by outlining several strategies to engage participants. A key concept is the sampling frame, which lists participants that can be approached, such as a mailing list or lists of patients, students, or professional organisations. We cover strategies that leverage different kinds of sampling frames starting with direct, digital, and indirect approaches. These are presented alongside dynamic techniques such as leveraging opportune moments for enlistment. Next, we explore challenges such as navigating cultural sensitivities and collaborating with gatekeepers or mediators to source participants. Then, we examine how methodological considerations, such as sampling strategies and generalisation, as well as research questions may shape participant selection. We note how recruitment strategy may depend on the methodology for analysing interview data. Then, the workshop offers tips on pitfalls to avoid with recruiting. We show how to conduct a post-recruitment evaluation. Lastly, we outline how to report on recruitment method and outcomes, especially comparing characteristics of recruited participants (e.g. demographics) to reported information about the whole population (e.g. from a census).

Pre-requisites: This workshop builds on the Interviewing series of workshops including Formulating Open-ended Questions for Interviews and Interviewing Skills as part of Mixed Methods. This workshop suits researchers who understand how the interviews will provide information that they need. So that they have a clear idea of topics to be covered, and the kinds of questions that will be asked, as well as a theoretical and conceptual framework, and a plan for analysis.

Related RED Workshops: Other workshops in the theme of interviewing include Formulating Open-ended Questions for Interviews, Interviewing Skills as part of Mixed Methods, and Interviewing to Quantify Knowledge.
