Griffith Asia Institute Research Seminar: Everyday torture: An ecological approach
In many countries throughout the world, torture, and cruel and inhuman treatment and punishment are not exceptional acts, but form part of the routine practice of security sector and law enforcement organisations. âDistinct from the "spectacular torture' that attracts the gaze of the international community, this type of torture often recedes into the background. This seminar explores extensive empirical work conducted on the use of torture by the police in Sri Lanka and Nepal.

Griffith Asia Institute Research Seminar: Their dignity requires a retinue: Ambedkar on rank, dignity and moral worth
Jeremy Waldron argues that human dignity should be conceived primarily as an 'aristocratic' rank now conferred on all persons within sets of legal norms and practices. In this approach, dignity is constituted by law and closely tied to equality under it. This article critiques such a conception via the work of BR Ambedkar (1891-1956), India's revered champion of Dalits and architect of its 1950 Constitution.

Griffith Asia Institute Research Seminar: The grid is here - India's government-led energy paradigm and the role of micro-level off-grid providers

However, this achievement is diluted by a more sobering reality: 305 million people in India are still without access to electricity. âThis presentation sheds light on this discrepancy, exploring definitions of both "village' and "electrification', which reveal that connections don't equate to access or âuse.

Griffith Asia Institute Research Seminar: Myanmar's armed forces and the Rohingya crisis
Despite the high hopes that followed the 2015 elections, Myanmar has stepped back into its dark past. This poses real challenges for the international community.â
Drawing on his recent report for the United States Institute of Peace, Dr Andrew Selth argues that unless attitudes inside Myanmar shift significantly, a fair and durable solution to the Rohingya question, let alone a full, public and legal accounting for past events, will remain a distant prospect.
