We invite you to join us this Saturday, 21st January from 10am in the Webb Gallery to listen to Sean Williams speak about his current exhibition 'Embodied Memory.'

Collective cultural memory is the way in which we define our national identity. Formed in the present, as a reconstructed account of a remembered past, the resulting narratives are based on an archive of written and other records which are unavoidably selective. The selective nature of the archive means records are inevitably coloured by the writer's perspective, so the narrative is shaped by the lens of the historian. This body of work examines the role that unarchived records, in the form of discarded objects, can play in reshaping those narratives, and how these stories can be subtly influenced.I am presenting antique objects as receptacles of memory that possess the potential to offer us alternate histories.

Combining objects into a form that is sympathetic to both object memory and historical story creates a synergistic relationship between object, story, and form that enhances the narrative potential of the artwork beyond that of its component parts.

Exhibition on view from 12 - 28 January 2023
Opening Hours are 10am to 4pm, Tuesday - Saturday
