Re-marks presents Sienna van Rossum's ongoing inquiry into the dynamics of looking and its confounding boundaries of virtuality and materiality, interiority and exteriority, and transparency and opacity. Her meticulously detailed oil paintings aim to draw the viewer into contemplation with rhopography, that is, the depiction of trivial and marginal details. Through this, she questions how our attention to these particularities can paradoxically reconfigure our perceptions of contact with inaccessible dimensions of the visible.
Van Rossum views her oscillating densities of ruptures, outgrowths and marks as evocative of the thresholds that form the visible surface of reality. In its excesses, mediations and disruptions, she speculates that a principle of contamination structures reality's fundamental process of "becoming visible."
